NYC: Ultra Last Lipwear Lipstick Review

I got this on a whim when NYC made its first appearance in the Kruidvat drugstore a few months back. For one fleeting moment, I had thought it was NYX but no, it was NYC for New York Color.

The philosophy behind the brand revolves around the fast-paced life of New York and the city's vibrance and vitality. What it comes down to is that it's a budget makeup brand that isn't shy with colours and that offers products that are supposedly longlasting and easy to use. NYC is owned by Coty, the same global beauty company that acquired OPI last year. It's a fragrance powerhouse responsible for the infinite rollout of celebrity fragrances and besides OPI, Coty also owns Sally Hansen, Rimmel and Miss Sporty, just to name a few.

Big City Looks at Small Prices is what it says on the New York Color website. Its price level is around that of Catrice.

I got a couple of nail polishes (that's greed) and just this one lipstick (that's curiosity). Price of this lipstick: €2.99 for 0.11oz / 3.4g.

According to NYC (excerpts):
Re-apply? Who has the time?! NYC New York Color Ultra Last LipWear is wearable, ultra lasting and stays on up to 6 hours. Perfect for your morning meetings and all-night parties. The rich, silky formula is so creamy and comfortable. It's super-affordable too. Great for girls on the go.

The shade that I have is called English Rose. It's a dusty rose colour that takes on a slightly more blue-toned medium pink shade on my lips.

Packaging
The lipstick casing looks terribly bland and basic but then again, OK, it's a budget brand. The thing that I dislike is that the bullet does not go all the way down the casing shaft. I'm sure you can forsee the little accidents that could happen when putting the lipstick cover back on. I believe NYC made it this way for convenience - that it would be easy to see the colour of the lipstick. Well, I find that pointless if what you'll end up with is a dented and/or squished lipstick (been there, done that).

Application and Texture
It goes on smooth and creamy and is highly pigmented. It leaves a slight sheen on the lips and it doesn't feather.

Moisturising
It didn't do too badly on the moisturising front. My lips could just about take it without a lipbalm base. Just about - it makes the fine lines on my lips more obvious but it's not so drying that it would make my lips chap and shrivel.

Longwearing
Let's get real. This Ultra Last Lipwear won't last six hours. I mean, have you ever bought such claims by any brand? Besides, if it's truly longlasting, it would be ridiculously drying. The colour stays on for two-three hours with some uneven fading. The colour does transfer with drinking and eating.

Conclusion
I really don't like the packaging but overall, it's not such a bad lipstick. It's great for throwing around in my handbag as there is no concern about keeping this (ugly) lipstick in immaculate condition. The pricing is attractive, for sure. Just under €3 for a lipstick that was, ummm, made in PRC (it says so on the packaging).

That's a very flattering color on you. If I'm not wearing reds, I tend to go for rose-based colors, as pink is to sweet on me, and I am decidedly not sweet. Yep, that's one butt ugly lipstick tube. ;D

I really like this lipstick on you. I'm not a fan of the packaging either--they could've made it at least a little pretty, but at least you wont have to worry about it getting busted up.

I really like your blog, hon! I just started following you.

I was eyeing these lippies during the buy one get one free a while ago, but I too thought the packaging looked rather cheap :x. Should've gotten some for crazy colour experimenting and 'I don't care what happens to these' days. Oh well :p.

(Whatever could PRC possibly stand for? :D 'Personal Roaming Charges'? 'Penguins Riding Choppers'? 'People Resistant Cosmetics'? 8DDDD
Yes, this is a joke, I know what it stands for :p.)

Yes! A monitor coffee spewing event! My work here is done! 8D! *rides off into the sunset with a posse of PRC's*

@Zuzu's Petals
Thank you, Zuzu. Haha, Sweet isn't my middle name either. ;D Besides, pink lip colours don't normally look flattering against my banana skin tone. With this one, I was hoping it would be a dusty rose shade on my lips. It turned out looking pinker but, surprisingly, I didn't look like I going on a date with Ken. Phew! ;)

@JC
Thank you for your kind words, JC, and it's very nice of you to drop by. You've got a lovely blog going there. Keep up the good work! :)

@makeup merriment
What a coincidence, Jeanie! Haha! NYC does have some pretty vibrant-colours, especially the eyeshadows. I'm sure your friend wouldn't find the items boring. :)

@sugar sugar
My pleasure! It's just an average lipstick, sugar sugar. It's good enough for its intended purpose. :)

@Paulina
You're very kind to say that, Paulina. Thank you. :)

@Adis
Yeah, with this one, the packaging totally reflects the pricing. It didn't have to be that way, of course, as there are budget brands out there with some pretty chique-looking lipsticks. Oh, don't fret about not having gone for any of these during the buy-one-get-one offer. It's only a matter of time before Kruidvat holds another one of these promos again.

(The second one is insanely funny! Now, thanks to you, I have the image of penguins riding on choppers seared into my brain. I have a soft spot for penguins, mind you, and I will never ever see them the same way again! ;D) Obviously, we all know that Coty chose PRC because it's an LCC.

@Michelle
I'm pleased to hear that, Michelle. :)

@Zuzu's Petals
Ditto here. [offers towel to wipe coffee off monitor]. ;D [still seeing in my head penguins riding choppers.......with Adis in tow]

This lippie looks gorgeous on you.

You will throw away the packaging anyway when the lipstick is finished so don't mind the looks too much, it's ok for that price right? Take care, Nicole x

@Nicole
Thanks, Nicole. True, true. With this one, there's hardly any aesthetic value. It's just utilitarian. As long as it serves its purpose as a lipstick, that's fine. :)
