Avalon Organics: Exfoliating Enzyme Scrub

This was actually an impulse buy. I was queuing to pay for some organic produce when I spotted this tube on the counter. It was the store’s Product of the Week and was going at a 20% discount. After contemplating for all of five seconds, I decided to add it to my shopping basket. I had been wanting to try something from Avalon Organics for the longest time anyway, so why not?

I paid just below €13 for this tube of 100ml. You know how it is most times with impulse purchases. “Total waste of money.” “I wish I hadn’t bought it!” Well, thankfully, this wasn’t the case this time around.

This is what it says on the tube:

Gently exfoliates for a clear and radiant complexion.
Botanical granules and fruit enzymes gently remove surface cells revealing younger, fresher skin. Organic Lavender, Licorice Root and Coleus protect new skin against irritation while our triple lipid system moisturizes for a fresh, healthy complexion.
For: All Skin Types

Here is its list of ingredients:

[eyes glazed over] Too long and complicated? Perhaps it would help if the same list had most of the scientific names removed:

Organic Lavender, Chamomile and White Tea extracts (aqueous), Organic Arnica Montana extract, Walnut powder, Organic Sunflower Oil, vegetable glycerin, Organic Aloe Barbadensis, tromethamine stearate, cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, glyceryl monolaurate, Licorice Root, Vitamin E, Grape Seed powder, Pro-vitamin B5, Allantoin, Sodium PCA, Coleus Forskohli Oil, Kelp and Pumpkin extracts, Organic Borage, Flax and Jojoba Oils, Bromelain, Papain, Rose Hip Oil, steareth-2 ethylhexylglycerin, benzyl alcohol, Organic Lavender Oil and other essential oils.

I like to know what certain ingredients are there for. Here, Avalon Organics explains it well. For ease of understanding of which does what, here are the main ingredients and what they do (taken from their website but I've broken them down into point form):

Walnut Powder, Grape Seed Powder
• combine with natural enzymes from papaya and pineapple to loosen and remove dull surface cells and impurities.

Licorice Root, Organic Lavender
• calm irritation-prone skin

Coleus Oil
• its antibacterial properties protect skin against breakouts.

Organic Flax Oil, Organic Borage Oil, Rosehip Oil
• rich in omega fatty acids, restore the skin's moisture balance

White Tea, Vitamin E
• antioxidant protection

I’ve been using this scrub for the past six weeks, twice a week. I cleanse my face with my usual cleanser, then exfoliate with this scrub on damp skin.

The consistency of the scrub is a tiny bit on the runny side, thus making it very easy to spread on the face. It’s not soapy and it doesn’t feel oily. What I like most about this product are the grainy particles (walnut powder and grape seed powder). To me, the scrub has the perfect density of grainy particles and they are of the perfect size. I hate it when a scrub has particles so sparse and minute that it couldn't possibly be passed off as a scrub. Ridiculous!

The scent of lavender is dominant. I’m not a huge fan of the lavender scent but I’m willing to overlook that because it’s such a great exfoliator! After a good scrub of about a minute, I rinse it off and my skin feels so clean and smooth. No tightness. Dead skin cells begone! And yet, it’s mild as it doesn’t leave my sensitive skin red thereafter.

This Lavender Exfoliating Enzyme Scrub comes from one of Avalon Organics’ range of skincare products, Lavender Renewal & Vitality: Advanced Care for Sensitive Skin. This Renewal & Vitality range consists of nine products for cleansing, toning, moisturising and treatment.

Avalon Organics has been around for sixteen years. It’s one of those brands that I’ve been drawn to because it supports organic agriculture. It doesn’t use artificial colours, synthetic fragrances or parabens. It uses 100% vegetarian ingredients and rejects animal testing. On the tube of this scrub, it also says it is EU Cosmetics Directive compliant.

That’s so much goodness!

I love, love, love Avalon Organics! The lavendar Daily Moisturizer is THE best moisturizer for me! I also use the Vitamin C Cleansing Gel - hands-down best face wash - no oily residue, non-drying, takes off makeup easily = <3!!! I haven't used this scrub but I hope you'll explore more of the Avalon Organics face products, they've never done me wrong!
