I Love Thee: Essence Nail Polish Corrector Pencil

If there is one thing that you must know about me, it would be that I have unsteady hands. Tasks like nail polishing and lining the eyes with liquid eyeliner don’t come easy for me. The more I have to hold a brush steady, the more likely I would mess up! The mind sure works in mysterious ways.

It’s obvious that I love to polish my nails. However, Nail Polish + Unsteady Hands = Mess. There are several ways to clean up the nails after applying polish. Some find using a small brush and pure acetone to be a very effective method. I’m wary of using pure acetone, so I have tried this method before, but with acetone-free nail polish remover. Unfortunately, it didn’t work well for me. It may have been the brush that I used or it may be that this method works best with pure acetone.

Another way is to use a cotton bud with nail polish remover. I don’t favour this method as (a) I find the tip too fat for precise cleaning, and (b) I hate lint!

This brings me to the next best solution: corrector pens. Corrector pens are nothing new and some of you may have been using these for a long time. I discovered these in the store just under a year ago and little did I know then how much I would come to love these pens. More precisely, the Essence Nail Polish Corrector Pencil.

Essence says (excerpts)
Acetone-free. With 3 replacement tips to precisely erase nail polish mistakes. With jojoba oil and cherry fragrance.

Ingredients
Alcohol Denat, Butyl Acetate, Isopropyl Alcohol, Water, Ethyl Acetate, Jojoba Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Trigylceride, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tristearin, Trilinolenin, Triarachidin, Tripalmitin, Fragrance, Benzyl Alcohol, Eugenol, Cinnamal, Coumarin, Geraniol, Linalool, Citronellol, Limonene.

This corrector pen(cil) imparts a strong sweet fragrance, perhaps more sweet than chemical. It costs only around €2.50.

How it works
Somewhere inside, in the centre of the length of the pen is where the remover is. I think stuffed inside is a kind of soft cushy material that has been pre-soaked with nail polish remover. The white pen tip is damp to the touch as the other end has been pushed in to touch that material soaked with the remover. Essence advises to close the pen tightly after use to prevent it from drying up.

How to use
As you can see in the images, it has a tip that is curved and doe-foot-like. The tip is stiff-ish, which makes it ideal for cleaning up the cuticle area and the sides. I usually do this when the nail polish is almost dry. It’s really as simple as just running the tip in small repeated strokes along the sides of the nail to remove the excess nail polish. It’s inevitable that the tip would take on the colour of your nail polish while it cleans, but it would help to wipe the tip often with a piece of tissue, especially if there is gunk stuck to the tip.

I have found that I can get a lot of use from just one tip – it definitely lasts me through at least three manicures.

Tip replacement
The pen comes with three replacement tips, housed inside the other end of the pen. To replace, just pull out the old tip and push in the new one. Usually, the tip sits very tightly in the pen, so when I have problems pulling it out with my fingers, I would cover the tip with a piece of tissue paper and pull out the tip with a tweezer. It’s best to wait for a few hours to give the new tip time to absorb the remover from inside.

My personal tips
• If for any reason the pen dries out, the tip can still be used for its purpose. Just get it damp with your normal nail polish remover and the tip will do its job just fine. I do however advise getting a nail polish remover with a small hole opening. The one I have is an acetone-free nail polish remover from Etos that didn’t cost a bomb.

• If you want to extend the use of the tip even more, try turning the tip around. I’ve tried cleaning my nails with this end before and I’ve actually found that it does an even more precise cleaning job! It may be a blunt end, but the cylinder shape has a useful angular edge that is very stiff.

Last words
Different people have different methods, but this is how I clean up my nails after applying polish. This pen is indispensable. I love it – it’s acetone-free, it delivers on its promise and it’s value-for-money. I highly recommend it. If you haven’t got access to Essence, you could try a similar corrector pen from a brand like Sally Hansen.

I Love Thee: MuLondon

Ladies, I know that you know of many good moisturisers out there that are natural and organic, but have you ever tried the moisturisers from MuLondon?

Back in April and May this year, I had written quite extensively on MuLondon: about the brand, about Boris the founder a.k.a. Head Cream Whipper (in Boris’ own words, not mine!), and there were reviews on two of MuLondon’s moisturisers, Organic Hemp Moisturiser and Organic Rose Moisturiser.

So, you can imagine how excited I was when I read that MuLondon was having a 20% off offer in December (some of you may have already noticed the coupon code in my sidebar in the last few days). There’s no better time to buy than now and so, out came my credit card. I placed my order on Thursday last week, Boris had it shipped on Friday and the package arrived here in the Netherlands on Wednesday. That was pretty quick.

I Love Thee: Jane Iredale Eye Gloss

Some of you may still remember that Jane Iredale was my first (makeup) love. I won’t bore you with the whole story again. If you’re interested, please read my Letter to Jane Iredale which not only explains a bit about me, but also tells in a nutshell what the Jane Iredale brand represents.

I’ve been using this eyeshadow quite a lot lately. Truly impressed, I am, and it definitely deserves a spot under the I Love Thee category (which, by the way, also features other Jane Iredale products). Something totally unrelated: The green nail polish will be featured here real soon.

I have a thing for maroons/burgundies, so it was no surprise that I chose to buy this shade called Wine Silk. Here's my review on the Jane Iredale Eye Gloss.

The Basics
The one thing that surprised me when I got the product was its size. Gosh, it’s unobtrusively small! Mind you, what I have here is not a sample size product. It comes in a tube with a short doe-foot applicator. It retails for USD15 and has a net weight of 4.3g / 0.15oz. The Jane Iredale Eye Gloss is available in eight shades.

According to Jane Iredale:
Eight silky shades add sparkle and absolute crease-resistance. There's a reason these are called "silks"! That's the way they go on, and that's the way they look on the lid. Smooth and luxurious, they won't crease or smear and will stay on until you take them off.

The Eyeshadow
The Eye Gloss is basically a creamy liquid eyeshadow. Despite its thick (but smooth) consistency, I’ve found it very easy to manage the colour intensity. As can be seen in the swatches, you can pile it on for a deep, rich burgundy, or you can fade it out for just a touch of colour. Drying time is moderately fast, but I do find that I have enough time to toggle with the colour before it dries on the lid.

Jane Iredale recommends using its various makeup brushes to apply, but I’ve been able to make do with my finger.

I can’t say that the Eye Gloss has a glossy finish, as the name suggests. It just leaves a sheen. In daylight, I can hardly detect the shimmer, but you will be able to see some bits of shimmer in the final image below taken with flash. The gloss remains featherlight on the lids, no matter how much is applied. No stiffness. No caking. No dryness.

Products used: Jane Iredale Eye Gloss in Wine Silk, Jane Iredale Eye Pencil in Basic Black, Majolica Majorca Mascara in Black

Here’s the best part. It does not crease till many, many hours later. I’ve had it on for nine hours before and, hey, it was still intact with no smudging or flaking. After eleven hours, I did however, notice a teeny tiny bit of creasing on the inner corner of my eye, but it's negligible. Again, no flaking, no smudging. This eyeshadow doesn’t come off easily with normal eye makeup remover. So, an oil-based one is advised.

One more very important and intriguing thing: its list of ingredients.

Dimethicone, Ethyl Macadamiate, Carnauba Wax, Tribehenin. May Contain: Iron Oxides, Carmine.

Short, sweet and simple. No fillers and no chemical preservatives. This product scored just 1 (out of 10) – meaning low hazard - in the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database evaluation. So, if you have sensitive eyes/skin, you really should give this product a try.

Conclusion
Excellent pigmentation, lightweight, no noticeable creasing and no evils. Love, love, love! What an underhyped eyeshadow this is! I truly recommend it, ladies. I do wish though that it came in a slightly larger packaging.

I Love Thee: Jane Iredale Cheek Colour Kit

For those of you who don’t know my makeup history, I must confess that I’m very un-adventurous when it comes to face products. I steered clear of foundations and blushes for the longest time after a couple of disastrous encounters (read: breakouts). Not nice.

That was until I discovered Jane Iredale Cosmetics and my makeup world opened up. Now, I know there are many mineral makeup brands out there but for me, it’s gotta be Jane Iredale.

So, ladies, meet the one and only blusher kit that I use and own. Really, it is. I never bother with non-Jane Iredale blushers, even those that happen to come in makeup kits.

About Thee
The Jane Iredale Cheek Colour Kit 1 is a dual-shade blush compact. There used to be two such compacts in the range, but I believe this Cheek Colour Kit 1 is the only one available now. As with all Jane Iredale compacts, they are gold. Inside is a mirror and a foldable blush brush. It retails for USD46 and you get 2.8g / 0.1oz for each shade.

The two PurePressed blusher shades in this Cheek Colour Kit are called Ginger (top) and Whisper (bottom). Ginger is a matte dark pink, Whisper is peach pink with bits of shimmer.

Jane Iredale also offers single blushers in its range with five shades recommended for cool skin tones and eight for warm skin tones. These single ones retail for USD26 each for 0.1oz. Whisper is also available as a single blusher under the warm category. Ginger is available only in this Cheek Colour Kit.

How I Use Thee
I very simply use my angled blush brush to pick up some colour, sometimes one colour and sometimes a mixture of both shades and apply it to my cheeks. I’ve tried using the what seems to be the darker shade, Ginger, to contour and Whisper, the lighter one, to highlight. I couldn’t tell the difference on the cheeks, so I abandoned that method. Rather than having me explain further (as if you ladies need enlightenment!), here’s what Jane Iredale says:

• To narrow a face, bring the color into the middle of the face, but no farther forward than the middle of the iris.
• Two colors create a subtle, sophisticated look.
• To widen a face, keep blush towards the outside of the face.

Why I Love Thee
This is what I always say when I write about Jane Iredale products: no evils. That means no talc, no bismuth oxychloride, no parabens. No clogged pores. No breakouts! Need I say more? Well.....yes. I’ve read somewhere that Whisper is quite like that certain infamous NARS blusher that begins with an ‘O’. I can’t say if it’s true, as I’ve never tried the latter before but I just thought it was an interesting piece of hearsay.

The blush takes a while to warm up on the skin and once it does, there’ll be a lovely natural glow on the cheeks. The slightly shimmery Whisper is just that. The shimmer is subtle.

Why I May Not Love Thee
It’s not such a big issue, but I find that Whisper crumbles easily in the compact. Please refer to the images above.

Final Words To Thee
You'd be interested to know that I used this blusher kit for my wedding day! That says it all, doesn't it?

I leave you now with this zoomed-in picture of my cheek with Ginger and Whisper mixed together. This image was taken outdoors, in the shade on a hot sunny afternoon. The other products used were (a lot of) concealer and a pressed foundation. From Jane Iredale, of course!

I Love Thee: Essence Lipstick

I never ever thought I’d feature a lipstick that cost just one cent shy of €2 and be able to say good things about it, let alone slotting this into my I Love Thee series. Well, here I am doing just that! And that’ll explain for the absence of a picture of a proud brand new lipstick. Instead, with apologies, I’d have to show you my used one.

This is the Essence Lipstick in number 33 Glam Girl. It’s a glossy deep pink shade with tiny specks of glitter and has a strong sweet bubblegummy scent. And I will tell you now that you might find some tiny random glitters still hanging around on your lips at the end of the day, even after facial cleansing.

Those are my observations and personally, neither the scent nor the six specks of glitter left on my lips bother me.

So, what is it about this lipstick that really won me over? Simple! It doesn’t dry my lips out. There is no need for a lipbalm base and I’ve said before that there aren’t many lipsticks that can do that for me. I’m a fusspot and I keep a careful mental list of these (and it’s a very short list). The Essence Lipstick keeps my lips moist and gives my lips more colour than a lipbalm would.

I checked the list of ingredients on the Essence website and I see top on the list, castor seed oil, followed by lanolin and further down the list, paraffin, carnauba wax and avocado oil. The rest of the items on the list of ingredients are those with long, convoluted chemical names, so if you’re interested, do check out their website. Funnily enough, I didn’t see any parabens on the list.

On the issue about how long-lasting it is, it’ll last a couple of hours but isn’t that normal with most lippies?

Sharing The Fun
As you already know, Essence is a German brand with cheap and cheerful products, complete with packaging to reflect that (I mean more the cheerful part, perhaps). The quality is all right considering the prices. I’d say I’ve had more hits than misses. What really impresses me about Essence is its huge range of products. They’ve got the whole range of makeup necessities but the icing on the cake has got to be their wide range of nail and nail art products, from nail files and nail correction pens to nail art stickers and nail art stamping kits (that last one you’re already familiar with, no?).

I Love Thee: Jane Iredale Daytime Eye Shadow Kit

It’s been a while since I last wrote about a Jane Iredale product. I seem to have strayed again, seduced by the glitzy lights of other brands. However, the truth is that Jane Iredale has never been far from my mind. Today, I’d like to take you back to the mineral makeup brand that got me started on my journey of beauty awakening.

About Thee
The Jane Iredale Daytime Eye Shadow Kit is one of two neutral palettes that I have, the other being the all-too-famous 28-Piece Eye Shadow Neutral Palette from Coastal Scents. I do tend to use the Jane Iredale one more often. Having 28 shades is fun but these 5 are really all that I need.

Jane Iredale has four eyeshadow kits in its collection. The other three are called Nighttime Eye Shadow Kit, Bling Eye Shadow Kit and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes Eye Shadow Kit. Sigh, all are my perpetual lemmings!

The palette of this Daytime Eye Shadow Kit looks luxurious in gold but it has a pretty standard design as it looks quite like some five-pan palettes of some other brands. It has a mirror and comes with a simple brush.

The five colours are named (L-R) Oyster, Almond, Cappuccino, Dark Suede and Charcoal.

It’s got a simple list of ingredients:
Mica, Boron Nitride, Dimethicone, Pine Bark Extract, Pomegranate Extract. May Contain: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides.

How I Use Thee
I’m sure I don’t need to go into detail about this but these are other suggestions offered by Jane Iredale: Oyster is not only for the eyes. It can also be used to highlight the top of the cheeks. These eyeshadows can be used wet for eyelining too. I’ve never tried out any of these suggestions but on the eyes, Oyster is indeed a perfect highlight shade.

Why I Love Thee
I hate eyeshadow fallout on the cheeks. Firstly, it’s annoying. Secondly, those tiny bits not brushed off and left on my cheeks can clog my pores. Talc is the culprit, I believe, and I’m very particular about this. I don’t exactly have the problem-free skin that you fortunate ladies have, you see. So, I always apply powder eyeshadow with a piece of tissue held under my eyes to catch the fallout. Yeah, I know it’s not the most convenient and elegant-looking.

With this Jane Iredale Daytime Eye Shadow Kit, there isn't much fallout to start with and the little that there is, I can tolerate because it has no talc. Be gone, you clumsy piece of tissue!

The shadows apply smoothly and they have good pigmentation, especially with an eyeshadow primer. The colours on this palette are so easy to work with. You can’t go wrong with these neutral shades in any combination. This kit is ideal to get you from a natural look (images right, top pair) to a smokey eye look (images right, bottom pair). Jane Iredale Eye Pencil in Basic Black is the other product used from this brand.

Why I May Not Love Thee
Oh-o, this seems to be a recurring theme when I write about Jane Iredale: it ain’t cheap. Compared to other similar-looking palettes, US$46 is on the high side. But compared to other palettes, this one has simple ingredients with some botanical extracts thrown in. It’s a consolation for this spending, I suppose.

The brush is basic and quite scratchy. For this price, I would expect a better quality brush. Having said that, I do use it occasionally though for the sake of convenience if I’m short of time.

Final Words To Thee
Neutral, simple and talc-free. I can almost forgive the unpalatable price tag. When I hit pan on my current palette, I would love to buy another piece of this Daytime Eye Shadow Kit. That would be ideal, but I’m making no promises, Ms Iredale!

I Love Thee: Jane Iredale PurePressed Base SPF20

You all know how much I adore Jane Iredale products after having read my Letter to Jane Iredale. With this brand, it was the beauty within that had captured my heart.

This marks the first of a series of posts featuring products that I use and absolutely love. While many are from the Jane Iredale brand, products from other brands may be featured as well.

About Thee
The name is Jane Iredale PurePressed Base. It is a pressed mineral powder foundation with a choice of 24 shades, divided into four categories – neutral, warm, cool and global. The warm shades have yellow undertones, the cool have pink undertones, the neutrals are for those with very fair skin tones while the global shades are suitable for those with tanned and darker skin tones.

The make-up of this foundation is pretty simple, as evidenced by the list of ingredients:

Titanium Dioxide 14%, Zinc Oxide 3% Mica, Boron Nitride, Dimethicone, Stearic Acid, Plankton Extract, Algae Extract, Pine Bark Extract, Pomegranate Extract. May contain: Iron Oxides, Ultramarines.

The extracts are what Jane Iredale calls good-for-skin ingredients as they are antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties and serve as protection against UV radiation, just to name a few.

This foundation comes dressed in a luxurious gold round compact with a mirror under the lid and an application sponge.

How I Use Thee
I always first apply a good facial moisturiser to cleansed skin and wait till the moisturiser is fully absorbed into the skin before applying PurePressed. Otherwise, it would appear blotchy on the face.

To apply, Jane Iredale recommends using her Handi Brush (a flat-top brush) or her Kabuki Brush, the former being the preferred choice. I, though, tend to use the Kabuki Brush. I just swirl the brush in the foundation without picking up too much powder and apply it to the face with a light hand in downward strokes. It is best to apply in thin layers and gradually build it up for the desired coverage. Never apply too thickly at one go or press into the skin with a sponge, says Jane Iredale. Committing this crime would cause the individual minerals to separate and make the face shiny. The application sponge that comes in the compact is to be used only for minor touch-ups, by the way.

PurePressed may also be used as a concealer by dabbing the area/spot with a small brush. However, I think this would work only for lighter spots. For more conspicuous scars, a concealer is recommended.

Why I Love Thee
The beauty about mineral foundations is that it is possible to go two or three shades lighter or darker and you would still look fine. According to Jane Iredale, this is due to “the way the mineral foundations interact with light in ways that adjust to your skin tone”. For example, I belong to the warm category and my staple shade is Warm Sienna. I also have Latte which is a global shade and is, in my amateur estimation, about two shades darker than Warm Sienna. I’ve used Latte on its own outside of the summer months without any problems at all.

The foundation feels light on the face, so I never have the sensation of wearing a mask. Its coverage is quite sheer and matte.

It is long-lasting, even in hot and humid conditions, and it doesn't get rubbed off easily. Jane Iredale recommends reapplying after prolonged sun exposure, excessive perspiration or after towel drying. With towel drying, only pat the face dry and not wipe. Washing it off is easy and fuss-free - just use any cleanser.

It provides UVA/UVB SPF 20 broad spectrum sun protection. A foundation that is also a sunscreen.....how convenient!

To those fearful of potentially toxic evils, you'd be glad to know that this product has no colourants and parabens.

Most importantly, it doesn't break me out. I would attribute this to the absence of talc, oils and bismuth oxychloride. Perfect!

Why I May Not Love Thee
All right, let’s get real and I will say why you may not love this foundation: it doesn't come cheap. It is priced at US$49.50 for 9.9g / 0.35oz. It used to have a US$46.00 price tag, which I thought was already dear!

I believe the price increase coincided with the design revamp of the gold compact not too long ago. This revamp has resulted in a different look on the lid which now has a huge logo across, and a magnetic opening/closing has replaced the previous press-in latch (product pictured is with the old compact). However, the good thing about the new compact is that it is now refillable with refills priced at US$40.00. All one has to do is push a pin through a tiny hole at the bottom of the compact to remove the used pan.
